Imagination Bay Murals
The client wanted four large-scale murals to be placed on the walls of their new child’s play area. The client has specified that one mural needs to resemble a cove environment with a sandy bottom measuring 123.587” x 96”. The second mural needs to resemble a deeper part of the cove and needs a section cut out for a monitor, measuring 187.5” x 96”. The third mural needs to be an Indo-pacific reef with a section cut out for a window of an aquarium measuring 169.5” x 92”. The fourth mural needs to also represent the Indo-pacific reef, only with an enlarged scale to match an interactive coral feeding game, measuring 100” x 92”. The client would like it to appear as realistic as possible while also appealing to the kids. All species depicted need to stylistically resemble the actual animal or plant and be appropriate for the region depicted.

The mural above depicts an Indo-pacific reef with coral, invertebrates, fish, jellies, and shark species that are native to that area. The lower middle section is a photo of the actual aquarium that is the home to live species. The black square frames on either side of the tank are areas that have magnetic sheet metal attached to the wall behind to allow visitors to create their own reef with coral, invertebrates, and fish magnets. I created each of these murals with Adobe Illustrator.

This mural to the left is installed on the perpendicular wall to the left of the mural above, continuing the Indo-pacific reef theme. The gray shape on the left designates the area that is covered by an enlarged coral feeding interactive game. The corals and invertebrates gradually increase in size from right to left to help visually facilitate the viewer to accept the oversized coral feeding interactive.

The mural above on the left depicts an underwater cove environment with seaweed, fish, dolphin, and invertebrate species that are native to these shallow waters. The colorful square in the lower middle of the mural is showing a photo of an interactive turtle maze game that will be installed on the wall. Visitors are encouraged to help the turtle navigate its way from the nest to the sea.

The mural above to the right is installed on the perpendicular wall to the right of the mural above to the left, continuing the underwater cove environment theme. This part of the mural depicts seaweed, invertebrates, rays, and sharks that are native to the deeper water of the cove. The blue square designates the area that is covered by a monitor that will have an animated turtle that interacts with the audience. When not in use for the interactive show the monitor will have slides that have suggested ways to engage the visiting children.

To help aid in visualizing the mural when installed, I used Autodesk 3D Max to models the gallery to the exact specifications. I also modeled the other structures in the room to create a digital version of the space. The curved structure is a bubble wall and the rounded colums by the entryway are bubble tubes.
